Develop a habit of converting things into action.

Some people seem to be born with innate talent and a witty mind. However, I believe that even if we're not naturally talented or skillful, all types of skills can be learned through practice. Some people seem to excel in every situation, and we aspire to emulate them.

The reason why I am writing this is that I realize a particular idea, though it is not solely my conception. In order to thrive and excel in any situation, whether it be a social interaction or something else, if we have the skill to filter anything – be it a statement, conversation, picture, notice, experience, or whatever – into actionable steps, we are likely to thrive well and stand out among our peers. Even if we do not stand out among them, at least we will not fall behind.

So, when someone says something, filter what they say by asking yourself a question: is there anything that needs to be done based on what they said? When you read an article, ask yourself: from this paragraph I've read, is there anything that I need to follow up on with action?

Suppose, during your leisure time, you and your colleagues have a friendly conversation. Even though you seem to enjoy it a lot, remember not to mindlessly let the conversation flow without reflecting on it. You need to take an extra step by evaluating or examining what you discussed and filtering your conversation into actionable steps if there are any. By doing so, you will be one step ahead.
